LaHood, for whatever it’s worth, has yet to introduce his legislation in the current Congress. Still, Daniel Bunn, the chief executive of the Tax Foundation, says that would be a logical idea for Congress to follow up on in the wake of the megabill.

Bunn noted that there has been bipartisan support for ending the “complex and punitive tax landscape” currently faced by expats, a situation that has led to an increasing number of Americans renouncing their citizenship.

“Lawmakers on Capitol Hill should recognize that this is a result of bad policy,” he wrote in a guest post for Tax Fairness for Americans Abroad.
